Stomach

Image
Stomach is part of the digestive system and receives food from the esophagus. A bottle shaped organ in humans. It is normally less than 20 cm (18 in) long and weighs about 1 percent of the body weight. It is capable, however, of distending greatly to accommodate large meals without increasing the pressure to tension on its walls. The stomach secretes large amounts of hydrochloric acid, which digests protein, activates pepsinogen to form the enzyme pepsin, and kills bacteria that enter the stomach. Acid is secreted from the oxyntic gland area of the gastric mucosa; other cells in this area secrete mucus and the proenzyme pepsinogen. Mucosa lubricates and protects the stomach wall and prevents acid from digesting the stomach itself. Pepsin is an enzyme that aids in the digestion of protein . The mucosa of the distal third of the stomach (antrum) produces and releases the hormone gastrin into the bloodstream), which stimulates acid secretion and the growth of mucosa in the digestiv...

Spine

The spine, or spinal column, consist of bone and is the primary support of the skeleton in vertebrates. It protect the spinal cord and the roots of the spinal verves, while allowing flexibility. The spine is the point of attachment for the skull, ribs, pelvis , muscles, and ligament. In humans the flexible part of the spine, or backbone consist of 24 separate vertebrate held together by strong ligaments; 7 in the neck (vertical vertebrae), and 5 in the lower back (lumbar vertebrae). The sacrum, located below the lumbar vertebrae and joined to the pelvis, cosist of 5 fused vertebrae. The coccyx, or tailbone, is below the sacrum and consist of 3 to 5 fused, rudimentary vertebrae. Each vertebra has two parts; a short, solid, cylindrical structure called the body or centrum, and the vertebral or neural arch. In the center of each arch is a large hole, or foramen, which is continuous and protects the spinal cord. Spinal fluid circulates within the foramen. Spinal nerves pass from the cord...

Muscle

Muscle tissue, which comprises about 40 percent of human body weight, consist of threads, or muscle fibers, supported by connective tissue. All living cells can move to some degree, but this ability is highly developed in muscles, which act by fiber contraction; the fibers can shorten to two thirds of their resting length. Muscle vary greatly in structure and function in different organs and animals. Based on structure there are two types of muscles; smooth and s treated, "Involuntary", or smooth, muscles are found in the walls of all the hollow organs and tubes of the body (for example, blood vessels and intestines). There react slowly to stimuli from the autonomic nervous system. The "voluntary," or striated, muscles of the body attach mostly to the bones to move the skeleton, and under the microscope their fibers have a cross striped appearance. Striated muscle is capable of fast contractions. The heart wall is made up of special muscle fibers (cardiac muscle),...

Hair Cut

One day a florist went to a barber for a haircut. After the cut, he asked about his bill, and the barber replied, 'I cannot accept money from you; I'm doing community service this week.' The florist was pleased and left the shop. When the barber went to open his shop the next morning, There was a 'thank you' card and a dozen roses waiting for him at his door. Later, a cop comes in for a haircut, and when he tries to pay his bill, the barber again replied, 'I cannot accept money from you , I'm doing community service this week.' The cop was happy and left the shop. The next morning when the barber went to open up, there was a 'thank you' card and a dozen donuts waiting for him at his door. Then a Congressman came in for a haircut, and when he went to pay his bill, the barber again replied, 'I can not accept money from you. I'm doing community service this week.' The Congressman was very happy and left the shop. The next...

Spleen

Image
The spleen is the largest organ of the lymphatic system , it is closely associated with the circulatory system. The function of the spleen include the formation of antibodies and the removal of cell waste products and worn out red blood cells . Most vertebrates have a spleen, but it is not essential to life. The human spleen is located in the abdominal cavity below the diaphragm, behind and the left of the stomach. Its size and weight depend on the amount of blood. It is storing and its immune functions . The organ consist of white pulp, red pulp and marginal zones. Nodules of the white pulp, which contain lymphatic sheaths and lymph follicles, are scattered throughout the organ. The lymphatic sheaths, loose meshes of tissue surrounding a central artery, are composed predominantly of small lymphocytes. The red pulp consist of thin walled sinuses and cords, which hold blood. Marginal zones between the red pulp and white pulp are the end point for many arteries and contain blood cel...

Liver

The liver, an organ found in all vertebrates, is the largest organ in the human body. It is a spongy, reddish browh gland that lies just below the diaphragm in the abdominal cavity. It serves to metabolize Carbohydrates and store them as glycogen; metabolize lipids (fats, including cholesterol and certain vitamins) and protein manufacture a digestive fluid, bile, filter impurities and toxic material from the blood; produce blood-clotting factors , and destroy old, worn-out red blood cells . Two large lobes, the right and the left, make up most of the liver; attached to the right lobe are the smaller quadrate and caudate lobes. The lobes are made up of lobules - six sided cells arranged in sheets one cell thick - that are closely arranged around blood vessels, blue ducts, lymp vessels, and nerves. Certain reticuloendothelial cells (Kupffer cells) line these lobules and play a role in immunity. Approximately three sides of each cell are in contact with a blood vessel , and there are ...
